Do the Math: Secrets, Lies, and Algebra by Wendy Lichtman

Secrets, Lies, and Algebra is the latest novel by Wendy Lichtman. This exciting story, published in 2007 by Greenwillow Books, is about an eighth grade girl named Tess struggling with some of the same things that all middle school girls do. How do you fit in at school? Deal with your parents? Friends? Boys? Tess deals with her life by relating everything to her favorite subject, math. She writes secret codes in her math notebook that look like math formulas, but are really equations that represent her life. Tess soon finds a mystery on her hands when her mom’s boss’s wife dies mysteriously. When the clues start to add up, Tess is convinced that there is foul play involved and a possible murder. Tess struggles with telling the truth to the police, or doing what her mother says to, and just forgetting about what she knows. If you like mystery, suspense, a little bit of real life drama, and a possible murder, all rolled into one, you’ll love Do the Math: Secrets, Lies and Algebra. I think boys and girls in fourth through eighth grade will love this book! Trust me, this will be one you can’t put down!
